First Night Spokane Demo (Urar Tiene)
Wheatland Bank drive-thru, Downtown Spokane, WA
The theme is "As If By Magic" this year, and we have once again been asked to hold a demonstration during the festivities. We are being paid for this Demo and would welcome assistance from other Cantons.
They have requested a blacksmith again this year, as well as gypsy readers and the combat demo (similar to last year).
So far the plan is:
The combat demo will be moved to the larger area to the right of the drive thru lanes. This area should be large enough to use as an aerick, plus storing gear in the back, plus room for the fighters to stand/sit. BRING YOUR CHAIRS! The alley side will need to be roped off (I'll bring twine), but the Bank's chain will rope off the front for us. Looks like we'll have shinai and rapier. Unknown if anyone is bringing steele.
The gypsy Readers will be in the bank entryway on the left and possibly in one of the drive thru lanes. The Readers we have lined up are: Rani Lily, Lady Eala and possibly Mistress Jesikah. We will be hanging signs giving info about types of divination to fit in with the First Night theme. I'll be bringing my take-down table and benches for at least 2 of the Readers to use. If we need the room, the 3rd Reader will be at a card table.
The Blacksmith (Sir Mikcos) will be in one of the drive thru lanes. He'll be using a gas forge and will need one of my tables for setting out his tools and stuff.
The gypsy awning will be set up near the back for a place to rest OUT OF PUBLIC VIEW. We need people to interact with the crowd as much as possible. The fire pit will be available again this year. Unsure of placement at this time. Tailltiu is bringing a large coffee pot, so we'll be setting up hot water for cocoa (she has Carnation Instant Breakfast packets to share). PLEASE BRING A PERIOD-LOOKING MUG/TANKARD so we do not have styrofoam cups in public view. Otherwise keep your drinks in the awning. I will provide a trash can. Tailltiu is bringing a table (or we'll use mine).
We'll have a TV Tray (or a table if we can get one) out with flyers and contact cards available to hand out. At this time we have several helpers for being Hospitaller to the crowd, looking after the rest area and tending the fire pit.
The bank is open that day til 5:30, so set up will be 5:30 or 6:00pm. Our time slot is 7:00-11:00 PM. We MUST be set up and ready to go BEFORE 7:00.
You will not be able to park at the bank, but you can drop off your stuff and then go park (Riverpark Square and the Parkade are somewhat close by). Also, I heard on the radio you can park at the Arena for free and take a free shuttle downtown.
We have verified that the chain across the drive-thru will NOT be taken down.
Dress VERY WARMLY with lots of layers! The cold seeps up thru the concrete, so care well for your feet. WOOL IS YOR FRIEND!
Restrooms are available in the Olive Garden across the street.
Please bring card/camp tables. The Readers will use some, plus to set combat gear on for convenience. Bring your chairs (the spares I have will be used by the Reader tables).
The lighting at the bank is adequate for our needs. There is only one electrical outlet. WE will be riging up a few extension cords for a heater for Mikcos's anvil, the coffee pot and possibly a Bard in a Box (if we can get it to work in the cold this time).
The Bank is on the corner of Spokane Falls Blvd and Wall. You can only approach it from SF Blvd as the other end of Wall is a walking promenade only.
